Piñero, R.A..

Nicolas, Jean-louis; Joubert, M.
Bacteria associated with semi-continuous culture of Brachionus plicatilis , which is used as the first food of marine fish larvae, were counted on Zobell 2216 E medium and identified. The numbers of bacteria were very high in both Brachionus (about 10 super(11) bact. per ml of digestive content) and in water (from 1.6.10 super(6) to 4.7.10 super(7) bact. per ml). The cultures were studied at driving a time when mortalities occurred frequently. The introduction of a Pseudomonas) phenon at a proportion of about 50% to the dominant microflora persisted in time and was little influenced by diet. It has been the cause of the repression of the Vibrio, Aeromonas group which was found in an unusually small proportion. It induced a lack of microflora diversity and...

Roux, A.; Piñero, R..
The analysis of the data obtained in five research cruises carried out during the year 2000 allowed to describe the composition, structure and distribution of decapod and stomatopod crustaceans of the benthic communities of the San Jorge Gulf associated to Patagonian red shrimp fishing grounds. Results show that decapod and stomatopod crustaceans account for 71% of the total crustacean species registered in the benthic community. Munida subrugosa is the species that presents the highest values of relative abundance, frequency of occurrence and relative importance index. The feeding habits of Libidoclaea granaria, Lithodes santolla and Peltarion spinosulum and food availability in the San Jorge Gulf fishing grounds explain the high frequency of occurrence...

Irigoyen, A.J..
This study investigates the impact of Undaria pinnatifida on the reef fish assemblage associated with the coastal rocky reefs of Golfo Nuevo in northern Patagonia, Argentina. Undaria pinnatifida is a laminarian kelp, indigenous to the temperate regions of Japan, China and Korea. It has spread around the world by international shipping and has also been introduced in some regions for mariculture. Its expansion into the northern Patagonian gulfs and Peninsula Valdes, a UNESCO Natural Heritage Site, may threaten eco-tourism activities that depend on local biodiversity and the esthetic quality of the ecosystem. In particular, there is concern about the impact of Undaria on a variety of recreational activities including diving, angling and spear fishing, which...

Derisio, C..
The Península Valdés tidal front was studied in its rol in the control of the spatial distribution, abundance, assemblages, diversity and life histories of the zooplankton community using samples from two oceanographic surveys. Although the front showed in general high zooplankton abundances, highest values, mainly due to the presence of immature stages of copepods, were recorded in the transitional and stratified zones coinciding with highest values of chlorophyll a. The zooplankton groups showed a distinctive spatial distribution across the front. The results showed that this front did not exert any control on zooplankton composition and diversity, but did on the abundance. In the homogeneous zone the harpacticoid copepods were more abundant, followed by...

Galvan, D.E..
This study describes the structure and seasonal dynamics of the reef fish assemblages that inhabit the Nuevo and San José gulfs of the Argentine coast. It analyzes relationships between the structure of the assemblage and several habitat variables, with emphasis on shelter availability and refuge characteristics. The diets and feeding strategies of the most conspicuous fish species are described and their impact on the density of one of their preys is evaluated. The northern Patagonian gulfs are in a temperate region (41° – 43° Lat. S) and are characterized by large extensions of sandy bottoms scattered by patches of rocky outcrops that form reefs. The fish assemblage associated to these reefs is low in species richness and has components of the...

Estimates of carbon flow through bacteriplankton in the S. Benguela upwelling region based on 3H-thymidine incorporation and predator-free incubations. ArchiMer
Lucas, M; Painting, S; Muir, D.
Spatial and temporal estimates of bacterial numbers, biomass, activity and production were measured in the S. Benguela upwelling system during the course of a phytoplankton bloom. Bacterial numbers and biomass were highest in the euphotic zone and correlated closely with particulate carbon in the water column rather than with chlorophyll a concentrations. 3H-Thymidine incorporation gave good estimates of production. Differential utilisation of photosynthetic exudates and detrital POC by bacterioplankton during the course of a bloom might account for the varying significance ascribed to exudates and POC as a source of carbon for bacterial production.

Schwartz, M..
Zygochlamys patagonica (King and Broderip, 1832) is an ecosystem engineer mollusk which forms aggregations or banks, of different densities, in the main frontal systems of the SW Atlantic Ocean. The objectives of this work were to analyze the composition, biomass, diversity and species richness of the benthic invertebrate assemblages at different scallop densities as well as the variability of their trophic webs at high and low scallop densities. For this, samples of the benthic invertebrate assemblages were taken at the Shelf Break Front with a non-selective epibenthic dredge. It was evaluated if the abundance (ind/m2) or biomass (colonial species, gr/m2) of the different taxa varied with scallop densities. The results showed that from 14 analyzed, the...

Gauthier, M; Martin, Y; Lelong, P; Breittmayer, V.
During an experimental continuous culture of natural marine phytoplankton in environmental conditions, microbial and biochemical tests performed to study production of antibacterial and antialgal substances by unicellular algae. Some parameters were further monitored to characterize bacteria and phytoplankton growth. The presence of inhibitors of algal origin was studied both in the water and in the algal biomass at different phases of the culture, through bioassays performed with bacteria (marine pseudomonads and vibrios, and telluric strains) and several algal strains. Interpretation of the results is difficult. Two successive phases appeared during the growth of phytoplankton, with two different algal populations. The unsteady population of phase I was...

Models of relations between bacteria and plankton, and regeneration processes in marine planktonic ecosystem. ArchiMer
Martin, Y; Lelong, P; Cauchi, B.
In order to study bacteria-plankton relationships, experimental and mathematical models were used to stimulate biological processes implicated in plankton ecosystems and to analyze community relationships. The model components are phytoplankton, zooplankton, autotrophic and heterotrophic bacteria, ciliates, nutrients, organic matter and phytoplankton antibiotics. This study shows the importance of some factors affecting bacteria communities dynamics and the bacterial activity in mineralization process. Bacterial populations seem to be controlled essentially by the concentration and chemical composition of organic substrates. Antibiosis and predation show a lesser importance on changes in bacteria communities.
